CSX 2137 is known as the Cobra that drew first blood in the Cobra-Ferrari wars of the 1960s. Dan Gurney's victory at Bridgehampton in September 1963 was the first FIA win for Shelby American. It was also the first time that an American driver won a FIA race in an American car.

Carroll Shelby had two cars prepared for LeMans in 1963 but they were raced by other teams. Shelby also produced three "LeMans Replicas" that were raced in 1963 as factory team cars. An integral (rather than riveted) hood scoop, four 48IDM Weber carburetors, large side vents to exhaust hot air from the engine compartment and a shortened trunk to allow fitting of an aerodynamic hard top are only four of the over forty changes made to these unique LeMans cars.
